8 Simple tips for being happy all the time

I look at my old self and I feel sorry for her, really I do. Why? Because I am so much happier being happier, you know, and I just feel like she was missing out big time.

Now, I’m one of those people who have a resting bitch face which is unfortunate, but the minute I start talking I have this bubbly effervescence that bubbles up from deep inside me, and I am filled with energy and joy and happiness and people are always asking me how I am always happy and in a good mood.

Obviously, the people who can brave the resting bitch face. They discover that behind the resting bitch face is a ball of energy and effervescent joy.

And the truth is that my joy and happiness are not innate, they are things that I purpose and strive for every day, happiness, my happiness is in fact, a choice. Yap! That’s it, secret revealed.

1. Positive attitude

The first thing I do is watch my attitude. What is attitude anyway? According to google dictionary, attitude is a settled way of thinking or feeling about something.

Yes, this is what I have to watch, every minute of every day I have to watch my attitude and make sure that it is happy, make sure that my glass is always proverbially full and when I feel like the party pooper in me is popping its ugly little head I employ step two…

2. Gratitude

I employ gratitude. I make a mental note of all the things that I am grateful for. And boy oh boy, this works like a charm. I won’t even be halfway down the list before I find myself smiling before I find that warm feeling of joy and contentment warming me up again.

I know that several things are addictive, but I am telling you this warm gooey feeling is one of the most addictive feelings on the planet, to me anyway, once I get like that I become very intuitive, I take a ‘not today Satan’ approach to everything that follows, I see a party pooper from a mile away, and I dodge them like the matrix, like nuh-uh! Not today Satan!

3. Beauty sleep

Something else I do to always be happy is get enough sleep.

I will be honest, though, I am not always good about this one. Yap. Some nights I get only three hours of sleep, so I will be a bit of a hypocrite to preach beauty sleep always, but what is important is that when I have a lighter schedule I prioritize sleep.

I notice that I am happier when I sleep more. Because when I get little sleep towards the evening I get very snippy and pissy, and I don’t like me like that because I just snap at people, so don’t be like me, get you more sleep than just three hours.

4. Kindness

Something else that brightens up my day is being kind to others. What does this mean? Kindness is the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate.

I love being kind to others, showing generosity and consideration really warms my heart, and it warms their hearts too and by the law of karma that warmth comes back to me tenfold, and I simply can’t get enough of it.

5. Positive thoughts

This should go without saying but for the record, I am going to say it anyway, you need to have happy thoughts.

All day every day and this one is easy because as established, we have a healthy positive attitude. We have the things that we are grateful for.

We have the random acts of kindness that we’ve been showing to people, we don’t have a shortage of positive thoughts. See how they all come together, the only thing missing is a big red bow!

6. Laugh 😀

Considering that this is now a whole industry by itself, it should also go without saying.

Besides, whom doesn’t love a good laugh? When I’m on my commute or in the water closet, I watch clips from Comedy Central and laugh until I can’t breathe.

Of course, any stall neighbors think I’ve lost a nut considering that usually I have headphones on and they haven’t a clue as to what makes this deranged stall neighbor laugh so hard, but part of being happy all the time is not caring what other people think :).

7. Exercise

According to fitness education, Exercise does a lot of things to the brain. You’ve probably heard of endorphins, right? These are hormones that are produced by the central nervous system and the pituitary gland within the brain.

Their main job is to inhibit the transmission of pain signals, but they also produce a feeling of euphoria. This is what makes you feel happier instantly, and the effects will last a good amount of time.

Endorphins are the only “feel-good” chemicals released through exercising, though. Your body will also produce serotonin, norepinephrine, BDNF, and dopamine, the reward chemical. All of which have huge positive benefits for the mind.

The bottom line: the combination of these five chemicals will boost your mood, and have been proved to help to relieve both anxiety and depression.

8. Positive affirmations

The last thing that I can think of that I do to stay happy all day every day is positive affirmations. Yes, this means I talk to myself, like out loud.

Some of my favorite positive affirmations include, you are smart, you are brilliant, you are a problem solver, you are proactive, you are happy, you are always on time, you are the bigger person, you are beautiful, and more.

Make them your own. Come up with those positive affirmations that will sustain your happy mood throughout the day and treat yourself.

*Bonus Tip

Because I like y’all I’ll give you one more as a bonus for bothering to come over and spend part of your day with me. The bonus one is to ignore. Yes, you read that right. Hit the ignore button.

If someone is trying to steal your joy remember you have the option to exit the situation, you don’t have to stay in that state of chaos, and you could simply leave the situation. Not today Satan should be part of your positive affirmations.

Additionally, remember that happiness is a choice. Yes, it is as simple as reminding yourself that happiness is a decision away. You could choose to be happy right now.

Conclusion

I hope this helps, I am smiling now as I write this, I hope some of that joy translates to wherever you’re reading this from.
