5 Important reasons why you need to graduate college with a high GPA

5 Important reasons why you need to graduate college with a high GPA. Why is your college GPA important? Why do you need to graduate college with a high GPA? It’s a million-dollar question, isn’t it? Not really, but it’s important all the same. In this blog post, we look at 5 crucial reasons why.

Let’s begin with the basics. What is a college GPA? A GPA is an acronym for Grade Point Average. So what is a Grade Point Average?

What is a GPA?

Your GPA, or Grade Point Average, is a number that indicates how well or how high you scored in your courses on average.

It’s meant to score you (usually on a GPA scale between 1.0 and 4.0) during your studies and shows whether your overall grades have been high or low. This number is then used to assess whether you meet the standards and expectations set by the degree program or university.

What constitutes a high GPA?

What constitutes a high GPA may vary from campus to campus, but if you wish to know what it constitutes for your campus specifically, then you need to find out the minimum GPA to get you into the Dean’s list.

For my Alma Mater, it was a 3.3 GPA. This is precisely why I am saying it depends on your Alma mater. A good rule of thumb though is to try and keep it at 3.2 or higher. That way, you can be sure you’re on the safe side.

How can you achieve a high college GPA?

I have shared several posts on how to boost your GPA as well as how to become a 4.0 GPA student. For that reason, I won’t be repeating myself here. Please click the highlighted text to read those two blogs.

The bottom line for scoring a high GPA is a three-point trifecta, studying, attitude/mindset, and consistency. That is all.

Why you need to graduate college with a high GPA

Why is it important to graduate with a high GPA? In all honesty, it really depends on an individual and the future you wish to have.

I have interacted with a lot of individuals who all point at Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates talking about how they dropped out of school and still did okay and I keep asking the same question. “Do you notice how short that list is?” They are the exception and not the rule.

For some of us, most of us, we have to take the long route and that’s okay. First, make peace with that and fix your mindset,  this is all for the sake of a bright future right? Then it’s worth it.

The way I see it, a high GPA is important for several reasons, too many to discuss at length however, in this blog post we shall look at 5 of the ones that I consider the most important.

Grad school

This is one that I’m sure that even you have thought about. If you wish to do your master’s then you graduating with a high GPA is all but mandatory.

Depending on where you wish to do, your master’s will affect just how high a GPA you’ll need. For some a 3.0 GPA is good enough for others, a 3.5 GPA is the least they are willing to take, and for others, a 3.7 GPA or higher.

The higher ranked the school, the more competitive and the higher the GPA they’ll require for your admission.

Scholarships

This is another crucial reason why you need to graduate with a high GPA. A lot of scholarships for higher learning are GPA-dependent because they are highly competitive.

Do you wish to do your master’s at a fraction of the cost? Great! Then get your GPA as high as you can. It’s that simple.

Top tier firms

The third crucial reason why you need to graduate with a high GPA is that some top-tier firms only recruit by GPA.

If you wish to work for a great firm that pays its entry-level staff well and has great benefits, then it is worth putting your back into getting that GPA high and keeping it high.

More options

The fourth reason why you need to graduate college with a high GPA is that you simply have more options. You can proceed to do your master’s if you wish, or you can compete for a top-tier firm or even just get employed to do research in your field. Whatever you want. That’s the point.

Think of it the same way you thought about it when you were studying for your college entrance exams. The higher your high school score, the more colleges you were likely to get into, right?

This isn’t that much different. Most of life is trying to make the best choices possible so that we can increase our chances for success.

References and other opportunities

Another crucial reason why you need to graduate college with a high GPA is because of references and other opportunities. The higher your GPA, the more likely you are to get along with your instructors and other school staff.

These people are a great network resource and a great resource to hooking you up with great opportunities. They can open doors for you that at entry level you simply can’t open for yourself.

Here is a different perspective on this

This too.

Conclusion

In conclusion, realize that your college GPA is the only indicator of your discipline, determination, and your work ethic before you have worked for a few years.

When entering the workforce for the first time, these people don’t know anything about you. The only thing they have to go by is your grade point average. Why do they use that? Great question.

If I was a recruiter, this is why I would. Getting a high GPA that one time isn’t the biggest deal, but keeping that GPA high takes discipline and consistency, and that is something I would want the company that has hired me to get them the best new talent out there.

Finally, a GPA isn’t everything the same way money isn’t everything, yet we still need it to survive, right? Well, there you go.

I hope this gave you something to think about, and perhaps answered your question if you were wondering if you should even bother with your college GPA.
